El juego utiliza un tablero cuadriculado con piezas distintivas (normalmente negras y blancas para dos jugadores). Los jugadores comienzan con sus piezas agrupadas en esquinas opuestas, con el objetivo de ser el primero en mover todas sus piezas a la esquina inicial del oponente. Los movimientos consisten en pasos simples a casillas adyacentes o saltos consecutivos por encima de piezas.
