Destiny 2 Username Glitch: Bungie Responds

Free Name Change Tokens on the Way

Following a recent update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names (account usernames) had been unexpectedly altered. Affected players reported their names replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This issue, first reported around August 14th, stemmed from a bug in Bungie's name moderation system.

Bungie acknowledged the problem on Twitter (X), stating they were investigating a large-scale username change caused by their moderation tool. They promised an update, including details on providing all players with an additional name change token.

Bungie's name moderation typically flags and changes usernames violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this incident affected numerous players with perfectly acceptable usernames, some dating back to 2015.

Bungie swiftly responded, confirming the widespread nature of the problem via several tweets. They subsequently announced that the root cause had been identified and a server-side fix deployed to prevent further incidents. While the fix is in place, Bungie reiterated their plan to distribute free name change tokens to all players as compensation.

Players are advised to remain patient and await further communication from Bungie regarding the token distribution. Those affected by the accidental name change can expect this compensation and continued updates from the developers.
