James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, is known for casting his friends in his projects. Now, an actress from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has confirmed discussions with Gunn about a role in the upcoming DC Universe.
The DC Universe aims to create a successful shared universe of DC characters, unlike its predecessor, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). While the DCEU had some box office successes, it lacked overall cohesion, leading to inconsistent storytelling and fan confusion. Warner Bros. hopes Gunn, known for his Guardians of the Galaxy films, can steer the DCU clear of these issues, possibly bringing familiar faces along.
According to Agents of Fandom, Pom Klementieff, who played Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy, revealed at San Antonio's Superhero Comic Con that she's spoken with Gunn about a specific DC character. While she wouldn't disclose details, she confirmed Gunn has a role in mind for her.
Klementieff also shared her positive experience working with Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concluding with the team's disbandment, she remains open to reprising her role as Mantis in the future.
Gunn later confirmed Klementieff's statements on Threads, clarifying that the role isn't in his upcoming Superman film, and that it's a different, specific character. However, neither Gunn nor Klementieff has revealed the character's identity.
Gunn's tendency to cast familiar faces, including his brother and wife, has drawn criticism. However, many filmmakers work with the same actors, and judgments should perhaps be reserved until Klementieff's potential DC role is revealed and her performance assessed.
Guardians of the Galaxy films are available on Disney+.
