WHEN INVESTIGATING A VEHICLE COLLISION

Use the CrashScan App with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter to scan vehicle computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR), commonly known as the "blackbox," when supported (see vehicle compatibility below). CrashScan helps investigators identify, extract, and analyze stored pre-crash data. This information can validate auto insurance claims and serve as a key indicator for establishing fault or identifying questionable collision reports.

DETAILED COLLISION REPORTS

If the CrashScan is successful, the report provides impact severity, impact direction (front/rear/side impact), and contextual information such as:

- Collision severity: minor, moderate, or severe

- EDR activation thresholds

- 5.0 seconds of pre-crash data including speed, brake and accelerator pedal application, and steering input

- Occupant count and seatbelt status

- Estimated repair costs (in monetary value)

- Likelihood of structural deformation

- Injury risk assessment (whiplash, recovery duration)

- Comparative g-forces from daily activities

*Injury risk algorithms utilize recorded acceleration data, scientific research, and databases including the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS)

PRIVACY REGULATIONS (EDR DATA)

Canada: No specific legislation; EDR data is classified as diagnostic and non-private. However, insurers typically obtain consent as standard practice.

United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, enacted December 2015, restricts EDR data access and establishes that collected information belongs to the vehicle owner or lessee. Seventeen states have implemented EDR privacy regulations: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington. These states generally require vehicle owner or policyholder consent for EDR data download, with specific

exceptions.
