My First Adult LEGO Purchase Was This Mario Set and I Have No Regrets

Authore: GraceUpdate:Mar 16,2025

I'm generally practical with my spending. Essentials get priority, and the occasional sale-priced video game might sneak in, but beyond that, I'm pretty restrained. It wasn't until last year that I even considered buying something as frivolous as a LEGO set. Despite loving them as a child, I guess I just grew out of it. Part of that is LEGO's hefty price tag. While some sets are affordable, movie or video game tie-ins often inflate the cost. That's why the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant took so long to win me over. It's been on sale for under $50 since last October, but only recently did I decide my desk needed a new, rather unusual, potted plant.

I initially considered this set after seeing IGN's build. Being a longtime Mario fan, it felt like the perfect way to showcase my love for the franchise. LEGO's botanical line offers many beautiful flower sets, but none are as delightfully terrifying as this little guy.

Having built it, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It evokes the Mushroom Kingdom, and my little Piranha Plant feels like a project I've cultivated during work hours. I enjoyed the building process as much as the finished product. It took an afternoon, but remained engaging throughout. It’s my only Nintendo LEGO set, but this experience has me considering more.

How Much Would *You* Spend on a Beloved LEGO Set?

As mentioned, LEGOs are pricey. Adult-targeted sets regularly exceed $200, tempting overspending. Unless you're independently wealthy, there's a delicate balance between self-indulgence and plastic-brick bankruptcy.

This Mario set, under $50, felt justifiable. The hours spent building and the daily happiness it brings make it worthwhile. Is that happiness worth more than $50? Probably. But that's my personal limit.
