The beloved Suikoden series is making a comeback, albeit in a slightly unexpected form. Konami and MYTHRIL have announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS platforms. This free-to-play title is slated for release later this year, though a precise date remains undisclosed.
For the uninitiated, Suikoden, first launched in 1995, is a celebrated RPG series developed and published by Konami, under the creative direction of Yoshitaka Murayama. Loosely inspired by the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, the series (known as Suikoden in Japanese) has captivated players with its intricate political narratives, the mystical True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. Eleven installments, including spin-offs, have graced the gaming world, the last arriving in 2012. Instead of a direct sequel or a full-fledged reboot, Konami is delivering Suikoden STAR LEAP as a mobile gaming experience.
What Awaits Players?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh roster of characters while retaining the series' signature element: the gathering of 108 heroes. The game employs pixel art, preserving the classic Suikoden aesthetic. A sneak peek is available below:
The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes said to have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, the son of a village chief, experiences a sudden shift in fortune following a successful hunt when his village is attacked. This catastrophic event propels Hou on a quest for peace alongside Hisui (his servant with a mysterious emotional block), Shirin (his childhood friend with a strong moral compass), and Shapur (a former general turned butler).
While anticipation is high, the game's gacha mechanics have sparked mixed reactions within the community. Long-time fans have expressed a desire for a more traditional sequel.
Further details will emerge closer to the game's launch. For the latest updates, visit the official website.
