Tidepool Games has just launched a thrilling new game on Android called MageTrain, a fast-paced pixel art ‘snakelike’ roguelike that fans of Nimble Quest will find delightfully familiar. Drawing heavy inspiration from Nimble Quest, MageTrain combines the classic mechanics of Snake with elements of auto-battlers and roguelikes to create an engaging and dynamic gaming experience.
What’s MageTrain Like?
In MageTrain, you control a line of heroes that trail behind you, much like a snake, each autonomously attacking as you navigate through an arena. The challenge lies in strategically managing the positions of your heroes since their abilities vary based on their position in the train. Whether they lead or support, each hero brings unique skills to the fray.
At launch, MageTrain offers nine heroes, one of whom amusingly throws birds, each with distinct abilities that change depending on their role within the team. As you progress, you'll navigate through eight different dungeons, battle against 28 types of enemies, and collect 30 skills to enhance your team. Along the way, you'll gather gold and power-ups to bolster your chances of success.
The roguelike nature of MageTrain ensures that each run is unique. You'll encounter branching paths, make crucial upgrade decisions, and strive to survive as long as possible. This structure is reminiscent of games like Slay the Spire or FTL, where levels are not fixed, and there’s no option to save your progress; if you make a mistake or get overwhelmed, you must start over.
It Isn’t Slow-Paced
The excitement of MageTrain stems from the continuous improvement you experience with each run, even when you don't succeed. You'll learn when to play defensively, when to launch an all-out offensive, and when to simply survive for just another 30 seconds. This constant learning curve keeps the game engaging and challenging.
MageTrain is now available for free on Android, so head over to the Google Play Store to dive into the action. And before you go, don't miss out on our next news piece about the new MLB Baseball Strategy Game, OOTP Baseball 26 Go!
