PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, Not a Home Run

A hypothetical Family Feud survey asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would undoubtedly crown NFL 2K the winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of play, it's a promising offering.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience is evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking a truly exhaustive course roster (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, are easily overlooked.

The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Controller users will appreciate the right stick control – pull down to wind up, push forward to strike. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving and challenging experiences, catering to casual and hardcore players alike. The ability to shape shots via LB and adjust tee position adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics enhance realism. Playing as cover athlete Tiger Woods certainly helped my initial experience.

PlayMyCareer mode receives a welcome boost with narrative mechanics, offering choices that impact stats and gameplay. A memorable encounter with Christopher McDonald (appearing without his Shooter McGavin persona due to licensing) adds a touch of humor. Earned VC unlocks gear affecting stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests, such as achieving consecutive birdies, provides ongoing goals.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator, while not extensively tested, offers sufficient customization. Skill trees add further depth. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social interaction, reminiscent of classic golf games. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 avoids major flaws, delivering a solid, if not groundbreaking, golf experience. Its consistent competence might lack the "wow" factor, but it appears a worthwhile purchase for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing yet engaging game. A playable demo is currently available.
