PoE2: Expedition Guide: Unveiling Passives, Artifacts, and Rewards

Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces four major endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. This guide focuses on Expeditions, a returning mechanic from a previous league, detailing how to locate, engage with, and maximize rewards from this exciting endgame system.

Expedition Mechanics & Detonation

Expedition map nodes on the Atlas are marked with a light blue spiral icon. You can guarantee an Expedition encounter by placing an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot.

Once in an Expedition map, locate the central area marked by numerous markers and a tent housing four NPCs. While the NPCs offer basic information, mastering the mechanics requires further understanding.

The core gameplay involves strategically deploying Explosives near different markers to spawn various rewards:

  • Runic Monsters: Detonating Explosives near red markers spawns these powerful enemies. Larger markers yield larger monster packs. These packs are further enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: These relics offer both beneficial and detrimental modifiers. For instance, increased elemental damage from monsters might be offset by increased item rarity from Excavated Chests.
  • Excavated Chests: Located near black markers with the spiral symbol, these chests contain valuable event-specific rewards, including Artifacts, Logbooks, powerful currencies, Waystones, and endgame gear.

Use the Explosives UI (bottom-right) to carefully plan your detonation strategy. Explosives only activate markers within their AoE (green circle). Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal efficiency. After placing all Explosives, activate the Detonator.

Death during an Expedition resets the map, but you can retreat and return later. The event doesn't end if you leave the area, allowing a tactical approach: detonate, retreat, then engage the enemies with powerful AoE abilities.

Expedition Pinnacle Map

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. Take these to Dannig in your Hideout to access the Expedition Pinnacle Map. Slot the Logbook and click "Open Portals" to access a significantly larger Expedition event with triple the Explosives.

This system introduces Olroth, the Pinnacle Boss, whose appearance is indicated by a skull on the minimap. Defeating Olroth is crucial for acquiring Expedition Passive Skill Tree points (2x points per victory).

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Located within the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances the event, increasing rewards, monster spawns, and Remnant effects. It features eight Notable nodes and eight nodes increasing Logbook difficulty (and Olroth's challenge). Each new Notable node requires defeating Olroth at an increased difficulty.

Notable Expedition Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius by 150%, placement range by 100%, and reduces enemy Life by 20% N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, Detonation chains travel 50% faster N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward increases. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further, albeit more challenging, improvements. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to its significant reduction in Explosives.

Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are the primary rewards, used to trade with specific vendors for gear. Exotic Coinage refreshes vendor inventories.

Reward Use Gear
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen (Weapons) Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen (Belts & Jewelry) Belts and Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog (Armor) Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig (Used to acquire other Artifacts) Used to acquire Artifacts
Exotic Coinage Refreshes any Expedition vendor inventory N/A

Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock the Pinnacle Map system, leading to encounters with Olroth and high-tier rewards, including unique items. Increasing map difficulty increases Olroth's spawn rate and reward quality.
