RuneScape Launches Treasure Hunter Poll to Decide the Future of Its Microtransactions

RuneScape is asking its players to make one of the most significant decisions in the game’s long history. Jagex has launched a major community vote—the Treasure Hunter poll—that could fundamentally change how RuneScape approaches monetization.

Like microtransactions?

The classic MMO has put up an online page asking for your input. Starting today, you can vote on whether Treasure Hunter, the game’s microtransaction system, should be removed entirely.

If the community vote reaches 100,000 total votes, Jagex will remove Treasure Hunter. In addition, they’ll also retire more than 220 gameplay-enhancing items tied to the system over the years.

These items include 225 direct XP and skill-boosting rewards, leaving only two types of purchasable content: capped Bonus XP per skill and cosmetic items with a more grounded, lore-aligned design.

Beyond this, Jagex plans to introduce a dedicated year-long integrity roadmap, addressing concerns like the user interface, visual consistency, auras, and the long-debated Dailyscape mechanics. The update will also add new cosmetic toggle options, giving you greater control over how cosmetics appear in-game.

Jagex is calling this two-week voting period a turning point for RuneScape’s future. This move signals a major shift toward what Jagex describes as a more integrity-driven version of the game—one that prioritizes gameplay achievements over paid advantages.

Jon Bellamy, CEO of Jagex, reflected on how the game’s approach to microtransactions has evolved over time. He noted that the primary concern has always been that microtransactions let players bypass core gameplay, limiting the depth of exploration in RuneScape’s world.

The voting window will stay open for 14 days. So, visit the poll now. Or download the game from the Google Play Store.
