Squad Busters is celebrating its first anniversary with the monumental release of its 2.0 update, set to launch on May 13th. Since its debut in 2024, the game has struggled to attract the audience that Supercell had hoped for. With this major update, the developers are aiming to turn things around and breathe new life into the game.
This Isn’t Just a Tweak or Two
Squad Busters 2.0 is more than just a simple update; it's essentially a reboot. The core mechanics, from battle dynamics to victory conditions, are undergoing a complete overhaul.
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of Heroes. Players will now select a Hero to lead their squad into battle. These Heroes are drawn from existing characters, and if your Hero falls, the game is over for your team.
Combat mechanics are also being revamped. Players no longer need to halt their movement to engage in combat; instead, movement and fighting are seamlessly integrated, leading to more dynamic, fast-paced, and intense matches.
The way victories are achieved is changing as well. Rather than eliminating all opponents, the focus shifts to taking down the enemy Hero. This new approach has drawn comparisons to Brawl Stars, leading some to question if Squad Busters is morphing into a more complex version of that game.
Squad Busters 2.0 Is Dumping a Lot of Old Features
In this update, several existing game modes are being removed, including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder. Additionally, certain skins and the original progression systems are being phased out. To soften the blow, Supercell plans to compensate players with Hero Points and other in-game items.

It's clear why Supercell is pushing these changes so swiftly. Squad Busters has yet to reach the heights of popularity enjoyed by games like Clash of Clans or Brawl Stars.
As the first anniversary approaches on May 29th, Supercell is making a concerted effort to reignite player interest. To celebrate, they're introducing a series of daily piñata events, offering players the chance to unlock a new Hero, Mortis.
You can download Squad Busters 2.0 from the Google Play Store and experience these exciting changes firsthand.
