The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know
The impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved live service game. Will their investments of time and money be rendered obsolete with the arrival of a potential GTA Online 2, or a significantly updated version of the existing game?
GTA Online's enduring popularity and profitability have been key factors in Rockstar's decision to prioritize it over single-player DLC for GTA 5. However, the prospect of a new GTA Online raises concerns about the future of the current iteration. Should players continue investing in the current game, or wait for the inevitable next chapter?
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed these concerns in a recent interview. While avoiding specifics about any new GTA Online project (as it remains unannounced), he cited the example of NBA 2K Online and NBA 2K Online 2. Both versions were launched and maintained simultaneously, allowing players of the original to continue playing without losing their progress or investments.
Zelnick emphasized Take-Two's willingness to support legacy titles with active player communities. This suggests that if a GTA Online 2 is indeed in the works, it might not replace the original. Continued player engagement with the current GTA Online could mean continued support from Rockstar.
However, much remains unknown about GTA 6. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more information soon, especially considering the proximity of the potential release date to other major game launches, such as the recently announced Borderlands 4 in September. Until then, the question of GTA Online's future remains open, but Zelnick's comments offer a glimmer of hope for existing players.
