Eddie Murphy is making a highly anticipated return to the big screen in a major role — as the iconic Inspector Clouseau in a new Pink Panther film. Confirming the role during a July 28 appearance on The Today Show, Murphy delivered the news with his signature blend of humor and charm:
"I'm going to be Inspector Clouseau in the next Pink Panther," he said. "Yes, I'm the new Clouseau."
When co-anchor Al Roker playfully asked whether he’d adopt the classic French accent, Murphy leaned into the character’s reinvention with a twist:
"Possibly. He should be French, but he might also be Haitian. Let me clarify — he's Black. Definitely Black."
This announcement marks a bold reimagining of the beloved bumbling detective, long associated with Peter Sellars’ iconic portrayal in the original 1963 film and its five sequels. After Sellars' passing in 1980, Steve Martin took on the role in the 2006 reboot and its 2009 follow-up, bringing his own comedic flair to the role.
Now, Murphy is set to lead a fresh chapter in the franchise, with the film reportedly being directed by Jeff Fowler — the helmer behind Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022). Although details remain under wraps, the announcement has sparked excitement and conversation — particularly around the cultural and racial recontextualization of a character long seen as French.
The project had previously been in development with Murphy in 2023, but faced delays and reshaping. Now, it’s back on track — and potentially more inclusive and modern than ever.
Meanwhile, Murphy is also deep into other major projects. He’s returning as Shrek for Shrek 5, set for a Christmas 2026 release, and stars in the new action-comedy The Pickup, which premieres on Amazon Prime Video on August 6, 2024.
With Murphy at the helm, the updated Pink Panther promises to be a bold, comedic, and culturally reflective take on a classic franchise — blending legacy, laughter, and a fresh voice in a role that’s never been more timely.
