Sony Confirms Resolution of Unexpected PS5 Advertisements Glitch
PlayStation Community Expresses Frustration Over Initial Update
In a social media post today, Sony announced that it has fixed a technical issue affecting the official news feature on PS5 consoles. "A technical error with the Official News feature on PS5 has been resolved," the company stated. "The method for displaying game news on PS5 remains unchanged."
Previously, Sony faced significant backlash from its user community after deploying a PlayStation 5 update that caused the home screen to display advertisements, promotional artwork, and outdated news items. Beyond promotional images, the home screen showed article headlines that occupied substantial screen space. Yesterday, PS5 users voiced their dissatisfaction online following Sony's home screen modifications. These changes were reportedly gradually implemented over recent weeks and became fully active after the latest update.
The PlayStation 5 home screen now allegedly displays artwork and news related to whichever game a user selects. Although Sony has addressed user concerns, some maintain this represents a "poor design choice" overall. One social media user remarked, "I checked my other games and found they all had this feature too - most background images have been replaced by these low-quality thumbnails from news feeds, covering up the distinctive artwork that gave each game its unique character. This is a terrible decision and I hope they reverse it or provide an opt-out option soon. At least with the explore tab I could ignore it without having it affect every game I own." Another user commented, "It's strange to see people defending this. Who wants to pay $500 just to be constantly shown unsolicited advertisements?"
