The Spirit is a distinct Person, not merely an impersonal force. However, if we start on page one of the Bible, before creation even began, we see the spirit of God hovering over the dark, disordered waters of the earth, ready to begin spreading goodness and initiating creation. In the Bible, any time we encounter a description of the spirit of God—such as in the first few verses—the Hebrew word "ruakh" is used. Ruakh can describe an invisible, powerful energy that is necessary for life, making "The Spirit" a fitting title for the Spirit of God.

Of course, the religious leaders of the time viewed these actions as a threat and had Jesus killed. Yet, even then, God's spirit was at work. When the disciples saw that Jesus had risen from the grave, they proclaimed that He glowed with the spirit of God.

When Jesus appeared to His closest followers, He breathed into them the Holy Spirit, empowering them too to spread God's goodness throughout the world. Soon after, God's spirit came upon all of His followers. Today, through Christ and the power He has given His followers, God's spirit continues to hover over a dark and chaotic world, slowly healing it and working toward the day when it is restored to its former glory.

The Holy Spirit is a wonderful Person, friend, guide, counselor, and teacher. He was with God the Father and Jesus at Creation, and it was through His power that the commands of God the Father were manifested. When God said, "Let there be light," the Holy Spirit brought the light and all creation into being.

The Holy Spirit was present with Jesus in full measure while He walked on this earth. He guided Jesus under God the Father's direction in His everyday life. It was through the power of the Holy Spirit, along with Jesus' strong desire, determination, and love, that He did not sin while on earth. Jesus hated sin!

When confronted with such a listless spirit, one powerful cure is to pray to the Holy Spirit. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, [Prayer] is the action of God and of man, springing forth from both the Holy Spirit and ourselves, wholly directed to the Father, in union with the human will of the Son of God made man (CCC 2564).

One beautiful and ancient prayer to the Holy Spirit was composed by St. Augustine, a holy bishop who lived in the 4th century. He had a particular gift for words, and his prayer to the Holy Spirit is one that can lift up an uninspired soul to God.
