Microsoft has delayed the release of Fable from 2025 to 2026, but offered a first glimpse of exciting new gameplay footage to soften the blow. This highly anticipated reboot of the beloved Xbox franchise, originally created by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios, is being developed by Playground Games, the acclaimed studio behind the Forza Horizon series.
In a recent episode of the Xbox Podcast, Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, reassured fans that the delay is worthwhile. He emphasized his complete confidence in Playground Games, highlighting their track record of creating critically acclaimed and visually stunning games like Forza Horizon, boasting average Metacritic scores of 92.
Duncan stated, “We previously announced a 2025 release date for Fable. We are giving Fable more time, and it will now launch in 2026. While I know this isn't the news everyone wants to hear, I want to assure you it's definitely worth the wait. The Playground team is bringing their signature visual flair and amazing gameplay to Fable, incorporating British humor and their unique vision of Albion. It's the most beautifully realized version of Albion you've ever seen.” He stressed that the delay prioritizes the best possible game for both the team and the players.
Alongside the delay announcement, Microsoft unveiled approximately 50 seconds of pre-alpha gameplay. This brief but revealing footage showcased Fable's combat system, featuring a variety of weapons (one-handed sword, two-handed hammer, two-handed sword) and magic (fireball). Cityscapes, horseback riding through a fantastical forest, and even the iconic chicken-kicking moment were also included. A cutscene hinted at a werewolf encounter, cleverly lured by strategically placed sausages.
Initially announced in 2020 as a “new beginning,” the Fable reboot has been gradually unveiled through various showcases. Richard Ayoade's presentation at the 2023 Xbox Game Showcase provided early insights, followed by another trailer during the June 2024 Xbox Showcase. This marks the first mainline Fable game since 2010's Fable 3 and remains one of Xbox Game Studios' most anticipated upcoming titles.
