Minecraft, now a teenager at 15 years old, continues to thrive without any plans for a sequel. During a visit to Mojang's Stockholm studio, IGN sought answers about the future of the best-selling game of all time. Ingela Garnéij, executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, humorously dismissed the idea of a sequel, stating, "Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2."
Although Minecraft 2.0 isn't on the horizon, the survival-crafting game is set to evolve further. Mojang aims to double its current lifespan, with Garnéij and Agnes Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director, working together to set the vision and strategy for the game's future. "We've existed for 15 years," Garnéij noted. "We want to exist at least 15 years more."
Mojang's ambition is fueled by a desire to innovate while building on their established foundations. However, Garnéij acknowledged that the game's age presents challenges, particularly with its aging technology. "It's a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense," she explained. While there are no plans for an engine overhaul, new content like the Vibrant Visuals graphics update requires more time to implement.
Despite these challenges, Minecraft remains one of the world's most popular games, showing no signs of slowing down. There are also no plans to transition to a free-to-play model or incorporate generative AI technology. So while fans won't be seeing Minecraft 2 anytime soon, the game's future looks bright and full of potential.
