TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Ocean Keeper’

TouchArcade Rating: A masterful blend of distinct gameplay styles is what makes Ocean Keeper shine. This game successfully merges side-scrolling mining with top-down mech combat, creating a compelling and consistently engaging experience reminiscent of titles like Blaster Master and Dave the Diver.

In Ocean Keeper, players crash-land their mech on an alien underwater planet. The core loop revolves around venturing into underwater caves to mine resources before waves of enemies attack. Side-scrolling mining sections yield resources and coins, fueling upgrades for both the miner and the mech. These resources are crucial for navigating increasingly difficult challenges.

The shift to top-down twin-stick shooting commences when enemies emerge. Players pilot their mech, utilizing tower defense-like strategies to repel aquatic creatures. Death means losing progress within a single run, but persistent upgrades between runs ensure continuous advancement, even after setbacks. Procedurally generated overworld and cave layouts add replayability.

While the initial stages may feel slow, with challenging early runs, perseverance is rewarded. As upgrades accumulate and skills improve, Ocean Keeper truly blossoms. The strategic depth lies in the synergistic interplay between weapons and upgrades, encouraging experimentation with diverse builds and combat tactics. Initially uncertain, I found myself captivated by the game's addictive loop once it gained momentum. The satisfying progression and strategic depth make it hard to put down.
