Warning: Spoilers for World of Warcraft: The War Within Patch 11.1, Undermined, below

Summary

  • Renzik "The Shiv" meets his end in World of Warcraft Patch 11.1.
  • Gazlowe sparks a revolution following Renzik’s sacrifice, setting his sights on Gallywix in the Liberation of Undermine raid.
  • Gallywix stands as the final boss of the new raid, facing a likely downfall.

During the story campaign of World of Warcraft Patch 11.1, Renzik “The Shiv” is killed by Gallywix in a botched assassination attempt targeting Gazlowe. Though this iconic Goblin Rogue has been part of World of Warcraft since the game’s debut, his death becomes a pivotal moment in the Patch 11.1, Undermined narrative.

Recently, World of Warcraft began testing Patch 11.1 on the Public Test Realm, offering fans their first glimpse of the new content. Alongside new collectibles like campsites, players were able to explore Undermine and experience most of the upcoming campaign chapters.

Yet these story beats carry a shocking twist few anticipated. In the campaign, players journey to the Goblin capital of Undermine to stop Gallywix and recover the Dark Heart before Xal’atath—joining forces with Gazlowe, leader of the Horde-aligned Bilgewater Cartel, and Renzik “The Shiv,” second-in-command of the Alliance’s SI:7 spy network. Gazlowe despises the city and resists getting entangled in its political machinations, even as Renzik insists he’s the leader Undermine desperately needs. Their interference in Gallywix’s schemes draws a sniper’s attention—a bullet meant for Gazlowe strikes Renzik instead. World of Warcraft fan and Wowhead lore analyst Portergauge captured the campaign and posted it on Twitter.

Renzik “The Shiv” Dies in World of Warcraft Patch 11.1

Though not among the most central figures in World of Warcraft, Renzik is a familiar face—especially to Alliance Rogues. When the game first launched 20 years ago, he was one of the earliest Rogue quest givers and trainers players encountered in Stormwind. Even before playable Goblins arrived, Renzik stood as one of the oldest Goblin NPCs in the game.

Fortunately, his death is not in vain. Renzik’s sacrifice galvanizes Gazlowe, who becomes determined to end Gallywix at any cost. Rallying the other Trade Princes and the citizens of Undermine, he ignites a revolution that culminates in the new Liberation of Undermine raid. In his bid to kill Gazlowe, Gallywix inadvertently turns Renzik into a martyr.

Needless to say, Renzik may not be the only legendary Goblin to perish in Patch 11.1. The self-proclaimed Chrome King, Gallywix, is the final boss of the Liberation of Undermine raid—though the encounter won’t be accessible until the patch’s official release. Still, few final raid bosses in World of Warcraft survive their climactic battles, making Gallywix’s fate all but sealed.
