The surprise launch of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on April 22 created an internet sensation, but independent developers who had scheduled their own game releases for the same day were left struggling to compete.
Jonas Antonsson, co-founder of indie publisher Raw Fury, shared his thoughts online, explaining how major surprise releases like Oblivion Remastered can "bury" smaller titles launching around the same time.
"I've always loved Oblivion, and I'm personally thrilled to see it revitalized and introduced to a new generation of gamers," Antonsson began.
"However, from the viewpoint of independent developers and publishers, these massive shadow drops present real challenges. Other releases, big and small, tend to get completely overshadowed. Without the financial power or marketing muscle, we carefully plan every detail—including launch timing—based on the wider release calendar, all to improve our chances of being noticed."
Antonsson highlighted Red Soul Games' Post Trauma, a puzzle horror title published by Raw Fury on April 22. The game draws inspiration from PS2-era classics, requiring players to "explore eerie settings, confront dangers, and encounter other lost characters within the depths of the Gloom."
"I admire the newly released game, but I feel deeply for our team and especially the developer we've collaborated with for years—someone who has poured their heart and soul into this project," Antonsson stated.
On April 22, Raw Fury tweeted with a touch of sarcasm: "Thank goodness Post Trauma was today's only major release and nothing else was happening!"
From Bethesda and its parent company Microsoft's perspective, the surprise launch of Oblivion Remastered has been highly successful. The game saw an impressive debut on Steam and has dominated online conversations, with fans celebrating the return of classic character faces, vintage bugs, and well-known memes.
Even other Microsoft-backed titles that received substantial marketing are now competing with Oblivion Remastered. Recently, Kepler Interactive, the publisher of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, acknowledged the 'Barbenheimer'-like energy of launching alongside the remaster. Both games were immediately available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
When Raw Fury scheduled Post Trauma's launch, they had no way of knowing Oblivion Remastered would arrive and command the spotlight. It may simply go down as an unfortunate coincidence.
