Gaming hardware company ASUS has recently teased what could be the much-talked-about Xbox-branded handheld device. The ASUS Republic of Gamers X/Twitter account shared a teaser featuring its "little robot friend cooking something up," providing a fleeting look at both a Republic of Gamers (ROG) Xbox controller and a handheld system.
Last month, IGN reported on Microsoft's ambitious plans for video game hardware, which include a full next-gen Xbox set for 2027 and an Xbox-branded gaming handheld potentially launching later in 2025.
The teaser from ASUS clearly showcases buttons aligned with Xbox standards (Y, B, A, and X), as opposed to PlayStation's triangle, circle, cross, and square, or Nintendo's X, A, B, and Y configuration. Additionally, the device features a D-pad, two thumbsticks, and four smaller buttons, though these are somewhat obscured in the image.
Adding to the excitement, the official Xbox account responded to ASUS's teaser with a playful wide-eyed gif, hinting at an upcoming reveal.

While we await further details, the teaser hints at the handheld's key features: "Marathon stamina, more capacity, faster speeds" and a "fresh look!" These could be the unique selling points of the new device.
In January, Jason Ronald, Microsoft's VP of 'Next Generation,' shared with The Verge that the company aims to integrate Xbox and Windows experiences for PC gaming handhelds created by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), including ASUS, Lenovo, and Razer.
Although this Xbox-branded gaming handheld won't be a Microsoft-made console, the company is reportedly planning to release its own first-party Xbox handheld in the future. Microsoft gaming boss Phil Spencer has indicated that a first-party Xbox handheld is still years away.
The successor to the Xbox Series X is now reportedly in full production and set to launch in two years, aligning with Xbox president Sarah Bond's statement about Microsoft's commitment to advancing to the next generation of hardware with significant technological advancements.
Amidst the evolving landscape of gaming consoles, Netflix's President of Games, Alain Tascan, has suggested a future where gaming relies less on traditional consoles. Despite this, major players like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo continue to innovate. Nintendo's highly anticipated Switch 2 is slated for a reveal during a Nintendo Direct on April 2, where fans eagerly await details on its features, release date, and pre-order information.
