28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland, has unveiled its debut trailer, showcasing Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Kelson, fighting for survival in the post-apocalyptic world of the highly anticipated sequel to this year’s 28 Years Later.

Cillian Murphy serves as executive producer for The Bone Temple, but according to Variety, the Oppenheimer star will make a brief return as Jim from 28 Days Later before taking on a more prominent role in the third installment of the franchise.

We won’t reveal the full story here, but the trailer offers glimpses of returning characters picking up where the film’s unexpected ending left off. Dr. Kelson appears to have uncovered something—or someone—that could alter everything.

Even greater changes are still to come.

Watch the trailer for #28YearsLater: The Bone Temple — exclusively in movie theaters on January 16, 2026.

Official synopsis:

Expanding on the world established by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in 28 Years Later — but reshaping it entirely — Nia DaCosta directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. In this new chapter of the epic saga, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself entangled in a startling new bond, with consequences that could redefine the world as they know it. Meanwhile, Spike (Alfie Williams) is thrust into a harrowing encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell), a nightmare he cannot escape. In this new reality, the infected are no longer the greatest danger — the cruelty of humanity itself proves to be far more terrifying.

28 Years Later performed strongly at the box office, grossing $150.4 million worldwide. It also received widespread critical acclaim. IGN awarded the film a 9/10, praising it as a powerful and timely examination of societal division, with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland delivering emotional depth through visceral, gripping storytelling.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple arrives in theaters on January 16, 2026.
