Beyond The Pixels is a new London game development studio aiming to bring retro gaming back to life. Today, they unveiled their debut title, Astro Burn, along with a demo available on Steam. This fast-paced, fur-covered shooter will launch on mobile, PC, Mac, and consoles in early 2026.

The studio is led by HaZ Dulull, a visionary director with a diverse background in film, TV, and games. His portfolio includes work on Netflix productions, Disney+ series, Fortnite, Evil Genius 2, and Dune: Awakening. His latest project is focused on crafting original and licensed IP designed to thrive across games, film, TV, and user-generated content.

It’s not just going to be a game, really!

Astro Burn is a retro-inspired shoot-’em-up that goes beyond the screen. True to Dulull’s creative vision, the story will expand across multiple formats. An animated TV series based on the game is already in development.

Returning to the gameplay, you take on the role of Astro, a feline pilot. After a space mission, she’s on her way home with her robotic companion, AL. But instead of a warm welcome, she finds Earth under the control of massive AI war machines—no humans in sight.

With intense combat and rapid fire action, Astro’s nine lives will be pushed to the limit as she battles through waves of enemies in a bullet-hell environment. The game features ten unique levels, set across diverse locations including deep space, mechanical arenas, underwater zones, Earth’s skies, and urban landscapes.

Although mobile store pages are still pending, Beyond The Pixels has released a demo of Astro Burn on Steam. Give it a try if you’re drawn to 16-bit pixel art and sci-fi action.

They’ve also launched a trailer offering a first look at the game. Watch it here.

Astro Burn will include a two-player co-op arcade mode, letting you share weapons, team up to defeat enemies, or battle head-to-head in competitive mode. There’s also a roguelite mode for players seeking added challenge, plus global leaderboards.
