Patch 8 Arrives on April 15
The long-awaited final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) finally has an official release date. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on April 11, developer Larian Studios announced that Patch 8 will launch on April 15. A Twitch stream featuring Senior Systems Designer Ross Stephens is scheduled to provide detailed insights on the upcoming content.

What’s Included in Patch 8?

Larian Studios initially previewed the update in a Steam blog post from November 2024, outlining several new features—such as 12 additional subclasses, a photo mode, and more. Although this marks the game’s final major patch, the studio has promised continued support for the modding community. Future updates will introduce enhanced tools for players to create and share their own stories.

As described in the announcement, players can look forward to new abilities, animations, visual effects, summonable allies and cantrips, as well as unique voiced interactions for the Oathbreaker Knight. The update will also introduce custom reactivity options for Oathbreaker characters and homebrewed adjustments to certain actions, enriching the overall role-playing experience.
In addition, Patch 8 will feature a dedicated Photo Mode. Players will have access to a wide range of settings—including camera controls, lens adjustments, scene customization, post-processing effects, frames, and stickers—to capture memorable moments with their characters.
Larian Studios Moves On From Dungeons & Dragons

Following this release, Larian Studios will shift its focus away from the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) universe to develop an entirely new project. Speaking at the 2024 Game Developers Conference, Larian Studios' Founder and CEO Swen Vincke confirmed that the studio will not produce any DLC, expansions, or sequels set in the D&D world.
Vincke stated, “Baldur’s Gate will always hold a special place in our hearts. We’re incredibly proud of what we accomplished, but we won’t continue developing within this universe. We won’t be creating the expansions or Baldur’s Gate 4 many are hoping for. Instead, we’re moving on—stepping away from D&D to embark on a new creative journey.”

Despite Larian’s departure, D&D rights holder Wizards of the Coast intends to continue the Baldur’s Gate series and plans to release a sequel in the future. In an interview with PC Gamer in April 2024, Eugene Evans, Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Licensing at Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, confirmed that discussions with several partners regarding the franchise’s future are underway.
Evans elaborated, “We certainly hope the next installment arrives much sooner than the 25-year gap between Baldur’s Gate 2 and 3. We’re committed to taking the necessary time to find the ideal partner, strategy, and product that can faithfully carry the Baldur’s Gate legacy forward. These decisions are not taken lightly—we prioritize careful planning and collaboration over rushing development or partnerships.”
While Larian Studios is concluding its work on Baldur’s Gate, fans can rest assured that the franchise will live on. Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For the latest news and updates on the game, explore our article below!
