"Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary Site Hints at Switch 2 Remake Reveal"

Authore: LucasUpdate:Apr 01,2025

The excitement surrounding a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake has surged following Square Enix's launch of an official 25th Anniversary website dedicated to the game. The site, primarily in Japanese, commemorates the original release date of Final Fantasy 9 on July 7, 2000, and highlights the upcoming 25th anniversary celebrations. The website teases "various projects, including merchandise and collaborations," fueling speculation about a possible announcement of the much-anticipated remake.

This buzz is amplified by the timing of the website's launch, coinciding with Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2-focused Direct event scheduled for April 2. Fans are speculating whether Square Enix might use this platform to unveil the Final Fantasy 9 remake for the new console. While the website's content focuses on merchandise and collaborations, the mention of "various projects" has ignited hope and discussion within the fan community.

Last year, Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy 14, discussed the challenges of remaking Final Fantasy 9. He pointed out the game's vast scope, suggesting that a remake might not fit into a single title and could follow the multi-part approach seen with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is part of a planned trilogy.

In early 2024, Yoshi-P further stoked the fires of speculation by announcing Final Fantasy 9-themed bonuses for the Collector’s Edition and Digital Collector’s Edition of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Dawntrail. These bonuses include Final Fantasy 9’s Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion, with pre-orders offering a wind-up Zidane minion. During PAX East, Yoshi-P hinted at the significance of these references, playfully keeping the details under wraps.

Rumors about a Final Fantasy 9 remake have been circulating since the game appeared in a 2021 Nvidia leak of unannounced titles. Although Nvidia confirmed the leak's legitimacy, the list might be outdated. While some games mentioned, like the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC, have been released or announced, the Final Fantasy 9 remake and Final Fantasy Tactics remain unconfirmed. Additionally, reports from June 2021 about a Final Fantasy 9 animated series have yet to yield further developments.
