New First-Party PlayStation Game Will Reportedly Be Inspired by Smash Bros

A PlayStation studio, recently formed from former Bungie employees, is developing a MOBA titled "Gummy Bears." Initial development began at Bungie at least three years ago, around 2022. This project, originally conceived at Bungie, now resides under Sony's umbrella after a significant staff transition.

Unlike typical MOBAs, Gummy Bears is rumored to employ a percentage-based damage system, drawing inspiration from the Super Smash Bros. franchise. Instead of health bars, characters accumulate damage percentages, influencing knockback distance. High enough damage percentages result in characters being knocked off the map, mirroring the Smash Bros. mechanic.

The game will reportedly feature three character classes (Attack, Defense, Support) and multiple game modes. Its visual style is described as cozy, vibrant, and "lo-fi," a departure from Bungie's previous work. This stylistic shift aims to attract a younger audience than Bungie's established fanbase.

While the game's release date remains uncertain and years away, the shift in development to a new PlayStation studio suggests a continued commitment to this unique MOBA project. The current team, approximately 40 strong, is tasked with bringing this innovative title to fruition.
