Simu Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi, is spearheading efforts to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu responded to a fan on X (formerly Twitter), stating he's actively working with rights holders to bring the video game to the big screen.
The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, vanished a year later. Recently, Yen confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
Liu's intervention reignites hope for the Hong Kong-based action franchise. However, the success of his endeavor in securing the rights or otherwise reviving the project remains uncertain.
The original Sleeping Dogs game, released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen's undercover operation within a formidable Hong Kong Triad. Critically acclaimed (earning an 8/10 from IGN), the game's success, despite its critical acclaim, never translated into sequels.
