Warner Bros. Games has announced the closure of MultiVersus, its popular platform fighter, after its upcoming fifth season. The game's final curtain call is set for May 30, 2025.

Season 5: The Final Chapter

The official announcement, made on January 31, 2025, via Twitter (X) and the MultiVersus website, confirmed that Season 5, launching February 4, 2025, will be the game's last. This season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes), both unlockable through gameplay. All Season 5 content will be earnable without additional purchases. Following the season's conclusion, MultiVersus will be removed from all digital storefronts (PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store). The reason for the shutdown remains unstated.

Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy

While online play will cease, MultiVersus will offer a local gameplay mode, allowing solo play against AI or multiplayer matches with up to three friends. To access this offline mode, players must download the latest version of the game between February 4th and May 30th, 2025. Upon logging in, a local save file will be created, preserving all earned and purchased content.

Real-money transactions ended on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (in-game currency) can be used until the end of Season 5.

A Short but Memorable Run

Initially launched in July 2022 as a public beta, MultiVersus quickly gained traction as a free-to-play alternative to Super Smash Bros., emphasizing 2v2 team battles. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced significant updates, including new characters, improved netcode, a new PvE mode, and revised currency systems. Despite these improvements, the game faced persistent challenges, including technical issues, frequent disconnections, and player dissatisfaction with microtransactions. Reported player count drops further contributed to the decision.

By its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support. MultiVersus will remain available for download until May 30, 2025, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
