Game Freak, renowned for its Pokémon series, has unveiled a new adventure RPG, Pand Land, exclusively in Japan for Android and iOS. This vibrant, treasure-hunting game showcases the studio's capabilities beyond its flagship franchise. While Pokémon games have recently faced criticism regarding shorter development cycles, Pand Land demonstrates Game Freak's continued investment in diverse projects. This isn't their first foray outside Pokémon; titles like Little Town Hero and HarmoKnight have already garnered significant player interest.
Despite the concurrent release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Scarlet and Violet, and the Gen 9 DLC, and the ongoing development of the next mainline Pokémon title (following the ILCA-developed Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes), Pand Land represents a welcome creative departure. Players assume the role of an expedition captain, exploring Pandoland's expansive, largely oceanic world, uncovering treasures, engaging in combat, and tackling dungeons – either solo or with friends in multiplayer mode.
Currently, Pand Land's availability is limited to Japan. While an international release date remains unannounced, Game Freak's pride in the project is evident. Development director Yuji Saito highlighted the ambition to deliver a console-scale experience with simplified mobile gameplay. Pokémon fans can rest assured; Pand Land's development hasn't impacted the progress of the anticipated Pokémon Legends: Z-A, slated for release next year. Although details remain scarce, the predecessor's popularity fuels excitement for this upcoming installment.
