Switch 2 Joy-Con Enhancements Unveiled in Patent

New Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Patents Reveal Magnetic Attachment and Mouse Functionality

While Nintendo remains tight-lipped about the Switch 2's official specifications, recently surfaced patents strongly suggest significant Joy-Con upgrades. Reports hinting at magnetic attachment and mouse-like functionality are now substantiated by these filings.

The patents describe a game controller with magnetic mounting to the Switch 2 console. The text explicitly mentions "a first magnet and a second magnet" within the console's docking mechanism, and a two-button release mechanism. These buttons, according to the patent, are magnetically attracted to their corresponding magnets within the console.

Furthermore, the patents illustrate the Joy-Cons functioning as a computer mouse. The patent diagrams show the R1 and R2 buttons acting as left and right mouse clicks, respectively, with potential joystick-based scrolling. Illustrations depict both dual-mouse and hybrid configurations (one Joy-Con as a mouse, the other as a standard controller).

The magnetic attachment was an early leak regarding the Switch 2, but the mouse functionality is a more recent revelation, though hinted at in a January teaser showing Joy-Cons smoothly moving across a surface.
