Chris Hemsworth's Thor Tribute Sparks Fan Concerns Over Character's Fate in Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel star Chris Hemsworth has shared a heartfelt tribute video titled “Thank You! The Legacy of Thor,” reigniting discussions about the future of the beloved God of Thunder. The video compiles memorable moments from Hemsworth’s portrayal of Thor, starting from his early audition footage all the way through to Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022.

While the video could simply be a nostalgic celebration of a character Hemsworth has embodied for over a decade—especially with filming now underway for Avengers: Doomsday—some fans are interpreting it as a farewell message. The timing and tone have led many to speculate that Thor may meet his final fate in Avengers: Doomsday.

In the video description, Hemsworth penned a sincere thank-you note:

“Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the last 15 years I've held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me.
Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable. Next up, Doomsday!”

This emotional message, paired with the tribute, has stirred concern among MCU fans that Hemsworth might be preparing to step away from the role permanently.

Comments like “Please never walk away from this role. We all want you to stay” and “Please never stop playing Thor” highlight the sentiment echoing across social media platforms. On X (formerly Twitter), reactions lean toward dramatic predictions: “Oh yeah, Thor’s definitely dying next movie,” one user wrote. Another added, “Ya he’s getting cooked.”

There is context fueling this speculation. In a past interview with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth admitted he felt Thor: Love and Thunder fell short of expectations and acknowledged he became overly immersed in improvisation and exaggerated humor, which affected the film's reception—particularly after the success of Thor: Ragnarok.

“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn't stick the landing,” Hemsworth confessed. He reportedly feels he owes fans a stronger final performance.

This raises questions: Will Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars serve as Thor’s conclusive chapter? Or would a standalone Thor 5 offer a more fitting send-off?

However, the possibility of a fifth Thor film appears unlikely. Hemsworth—who has appeared in eight MCU films—previously stated he’s ready to "close the book" on the character. Additionally, Thor: Ragnarok and Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has moved on due to an already packed schedule.

Marvel Studios has recently pushed both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars to December 2026 and December 2027, respectively. At this time, confirmed upcoming releases include Fantastic Four: First Steps, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the two Avengers sequels.
