Pearl Abyss Rejects PS5 Exclusivity Deal for Crimson Desert, Opting for Independent Publishing
Pearl Abyss, the developer behind the anticipated action-adventure game Crimson Desert, has reportedly declined a PlayStation exclusivity deal with Sony. The company confirmed its commitment to self-publishing the title, prioritizing its independence and projected profitability.
This decision follows a September investor meeting revealing Sony's attempt to secure a PS5 exclusive launch for Crimson Desert, potentially delaying or preventing its release on Xbox. However, Pearl Abyss's statement to Eurogamer emphasizes the financial benefits of self-publishing. "In our last quarter earnings call...we revealed that we would publish Crimson Desert independently," the statement reads, adding that they maintain positive relationships with various partners and are exploring collaborative opportunities.
While a release date remains unannounced, Pearl Abyss plans to showcase a playable build to media this week in Paris and to the public at G-Star in November. Current expectations point towards a PC, PlayStation, and Xbox release around Q2 2025, though this remains unconfirmed. Any reports suggesting otherwise are purely speculative at this time. The developer's focus on self-publishing suggests a broader market reach is a key priority for Crimson Desert's launch.
