The launch of FF9’s 25th anniversary website earlier this year already sparked rumors of a remake. These speculations intensified when Square Enix shared a quote on Twitter from Vivi, the cherished black mage.
The latest update includes small icons of four of the eight main characters. Clicking these icons reveals brief descriptions accompanied by new artwork from FF9's character designer, Toshiyuki Itahana, known for his work on the Crystal Chronicles and Chocobo spinoff series. These descriptions encapsulate the essence and aspirations of each character within the game's narrative.
While no official confirmation has been made, the meticulous attention to detail in this anniversary celebration has led many fans to believe that a significant announcement regarding FF9 is on the horizon. In addition to the website updates, Square Enix has expanded its 25th anniversary merchandise collection. New items include a replica of Garnet's necklace, Vivi's hat, and a set of acrylic standees among other offerings.
Garnet’s Silver Necklace is now up for reservation, with an anticipated release on November 15, priced at approximately 38,500 yen, or about $260. A wearable replica of Vivi’s hat is also available for pre-order, set to release on September 6, and will cost around 17,600 yen, roughly $120.
The FF9 Acrylic Stand Collection offers eight different designs in blind boxes, adding an element of surprise for collectors.
With these updates and the introduction of new merchandise, anticipation for an FF9 remake is palpable. Despite Square Enix's silence on the matter, fans remain optimistic about seeing their cherished adventure in Gaia revitalized.
