Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have left the God of War adaptation. Despite having completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.
Key figures remaining on board include executive producer Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio Creative Director), along with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio). Amazon and Sony will now seek a new showrunner, producers, and writers to redefine the series' direction. Crucially, the project remains uncancelled.
A Continued Commitment Despite Setbacks
The Amazon and Sony partnership for the God of War TV series was initially announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, building on the success of the 2018 game reboot. This initiative reflects Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises into film and television. This led to the formation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. The announcement also included a Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, with further adaptations of established franchises planned.
Successful adaptations already released include Uncharted (2022), the highly acclaimed The Last of Us (2023, with season two slated for 2025), Gran Turismo (2023), and Twisted Metal (2024).
