NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in select regions. The end-of-service (EOS) announcement impacts the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, with servers going offline October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and certain MENA regions can continue playing.
Initially released in China in September 2021 and globally on June 27th, 2023, the game enjoyed a strong initial launch in its home market but faced delays and lost momentum before its worldwide debut.
Despite its Clash Royale-inspired gameplay and charming Hogwarts atmosphere, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened failed to maintain player interest. Reddit discussions reveal player frustration over a shift towards pay-to-win mechanics, particularly after a rewards system rework that negatively impacted free-to-play players. Progression slowed considerably for non-spending players, leading to significant player attrition.
The game has already been removed from app stores in the affected regions (as of August 26th). For those in unaffected regions, the game offers dorm life, classes, secrets to uncover, and wizard duels.
