NCSoft's Cancellation of Horizon MMORPG Project "H"
News broke on January 13, 2025, via South Korean news outlet MTN, that NCSoft had canceled several projects, including a Horizon MMORPG internally codenamed "H." This decision followed a company-wide "feasibility review." NCSoft, a leading developer of MMORPGs like the Lineage and Guild Wars franchises, cited this review as the reason for halting development. Project "J" also reportedly faced cancellation, while "Pantera" (or "Raising Lineage") remains under evaluation.
The MTN report further indicated that key developers assigned to Project "H" departed NCSoft. Remaining team members were reassigned to other company projects. The removal of "H" and "J" from NCSoft's organizational chart served as further confirmation of their cancellation.
While neither Sony nor NCSoft have issued official statements, the future of Project "H" remains uncertain. The possibility of another publisher or development team acquiring the project's assets and continuing development is open.
A Separate Horizon Multiplayer Game in Development
Meanwhile, Guerrilla Games is actively pursuing a separate Horizon online multiplayer project, internally referred to as the "Online Project."
Guerrilla Games publicly announced their intentions to create a Horizon online experience on December 16, 2022, via a Twitter (X) post. This game will feature "a new cast of characters and a unique stylized look." Job postings, including one for a Senior Combat Designer in November 2023, highlighted the development of challenging, multi-player combat encounters with new machines. A more recent job listing for a Senior Platform Engineer in January 2025, revealed expectations of over one million players, suggesting a large-scale online game.
Sony's Partnership with NCSoft
On November 28, 2023, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced a strategic global partnership with NCSoft. This collaboration aims to leverage NCSoft's technological expertise and SIE's global reach to expand PlayStation's presence beyond consoles. While the canceled Horizon MMORPG highlights a potential setback, this partnership opens doors for future collaborations and potentially brings other Sony titles to mobile platforms.
