Marvel Rivals Developer Apologizes for Wrongful Bans; Players Call for Rank-Inclusive Character Bans
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, issued a public apology for mistakenly banning numerous innocent players. The incident, which occurred on January 3rd, saw a large number of non-Windows users – specifically those utilizing compatibility layers on macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck – incorrectly flagged as cheaters.
The mass ban, intended to target cheaters, inadvertently caught players using compatibility software like Proton (on SteamOS), which is known to trigger some anti-cheat systems. NetEase confirmed the issue, stating that the bans have been lifted and apologized for the inconvenience. They encouraged players to report actual cheating and offered avenues for appeal through in-game support and Discord.
Separately, a significant player outcry centers around the game's character ban system. Currently, only Diamond-ranked players and above can utilize this feature, which allows for strategic team composition and counter-picking. Lower-ranked players express frustration, arguing that the lack of character bans at lower ranks creates an uneven playing field and limits strategic depth.
Reddit users highlight the disparity, with one user lamenting the inability to counter overpowered characters in Platinum rank, contrasting it with the strategic advantages available to higher-ranked players. Many believe extending character bans to all ranks would provide valuable learning opportunities for newer players and promote more diverse team compositions beyond simple DPS-focused strategies.
