Nintendo has officially announced that Nintendo 64 games available through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription are set to receive three exciting new features. However, it’s worth noting that two of these features will be exclusive to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
The trio of enhancements includes customizable controls, a rewind function, and a CRT screen filter. While the view/change controls option will be accessible on the current Switch, the rewind and CRT screen filter features will only be available on the Switch 2 starting from its launch on June 5.
Fans of the original Switch are expressing disappointment over the exclusivity of these features. Comments on social media platforms highlight frustration, with one user remarking, “The power of Switch 2—being able to apply a CRT filter. Truly, this is the power of next-gen hardware.” Another chimed in, “Weird how a simple filter is locked behind Switch 2.”
The N64 CRT Filter is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo showcased the new features using various classic titles. Super Mario 64 and Mario Golf demonstrated the rewind capability, allowing players to revisit previous moments in gameplay. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards highlighted the CRT screen filter, which recreates the nostalgic look of a CRT television. Meanwhile, Star Fox 64 was used to display the view/change controls feature.
Rewind is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.
In other news, recent updates to the Nintendo Switch OS have aligned the Nintendo Switch Online app with the software that will debut on the Switch 2. Although an early Switch 2 prototype surfaced online, it remains unusable without a day-one patch and was quickly copyright-stripped. Additional details about the Switch 2 include free performance upgrades for existing Switch games, variable refresh rate support, and enhanced GameChat functionality, which requires a phone number for verification.
Despite pre-orders selling out rapidly last month, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser assured fans that the company will ensure sufficient supply to meet holiday demands.
View/Change controls are available on both Switch and Switch 2.
