Netflix Secures New Sesame Street Episodes Post-HBO Max Deal

Authore: LoganUpdate:May 20,2025

Fans of the iconic children's show Sesame Street have reason to celebrate: the beloved series, which has been entertaining and educating kids since 1969, will continue its journey with new streaming homes. After HBO and Max decided not to renew their contract at the end of 2024, Sesame Street has found a new partnership with Netflix and PBS. This move ensures that the show remains accessible to a global audience.

Starting soon, viewers worldwide can enjoy both new and past episodes of Sesame Street on Netflix. Additionally, new episodes will be available on their premiere day on PBS stations and the PBS Kids platform across the United States, maintaining the show’s long-standing relationship with PBS that spans over 50 years. This exciting news was shared by Sesame Street via their social media channels on May 19, 2025, highlighting a unique public-private partnership with Netflix, PBS, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The collaboration aims to continue helping children grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.

As part of this new chapter, Sesame Street is also set to undergo some structural changes starting with Season 56. Each episode will now feature an 11-minute story segment, drawing inspiration from successful character-driven children's shows like Bluey. However, classic segments such as Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck will continue to delight fans, ensuring a blend of the old and new.

The partnership with Netflix extends beyond streaming. As Netflix aims to expand its gaming offerings, allowing subscribers to play games directly through the app using their mobile device as a controller, this deal will enable the development of video games based on Sesame Street and its spinoff, Sesame Street Mecha Builders. This move reflects Netflix's broader strategy to enhance its service offerings.

Sesame Street first aired in November 1969 and joined the PBS network in the 1970s, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon. In 2015, HBO and Max entered the scene with a $35 million deal to produce new episodes. However, as HBO and Max shifted their focus away from children's programming by late 2024, citing poor subscriber engagement, the partnership concluded. Despite this, the Sesame Street library will remain available on HBO and Max until 2027, though without the production aspect of the original agreement.
