Nexon and Blizzard Sign New Deal: Overwatch Mobile Still in Play

Authore: SimonUpdate:May 01,2025

The prospect of Overwatch coming to mobile devices has long been a tantalizing idea for fans, especially after it was thought to have been shelved following revelations in Jason Schreier's book about Blizzard. However, a recent agreement between Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard might just breathe new life into this dream.

The primary focus of the deal is on securing the publishing and development rights for a new title in the renowned StarCraft real-time strategy (RTS) series. The competition was intense, with other major players like Krafton and Netmarble reportedly in the running. Should this deal be confirmed, Nexon will take the helm in steering future entries in this iconic franchise.

What's particularly exciting and unexpected is the inclusion of potential publishing rights for an Overwatch mobile game in the bidding. This development not only suggests that the mobile version is far from dead but also hints at an official sequel that could take the form of a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA).

ytNerf thisIt's worth noting that Overwatch has previously ventured into the MOBA genre through Heroes of the Storm, which Blizzard heavily promoted at one point. There's a possibility that the proposed Overwatch MOBA could actually be a mobile version of Heroes of the Storm. Alternatively, it could be a completely new spin-off.

However, the notion of this being an 'Overwatch 3' can be safely dismissed, as such a move would represent a significant shift for the franchise, which has traditionally been focused on console and PC platforms.

Embracing the MOBA genre could prove advantageous for Overwatch, especially with new competitors like Marvel Rivals emerging as potential threats. This could be the perfect time for Blizzard and their publishing partners to take bold steps to revitalize this once thriving franchise.
