First Look: Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

Authore: NicholasUpdate:May 21,2025

Nintendo has given fans their first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's launch next month. The latest video from Nintendo's official Nintendo Today app not only showcases the new cartridge but also highlights the Switch 2's carry case, designed to safely store up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges.

As previously announced, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their predecessors, allowing the new console to use a single cartridge slot for games from both generations. However, there's a notable distinction: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctly red, a feature that appears consistent across all titles, not just the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. For those without the Nintendo Today app, you can view the video shared by OatmealDome on X / Twitter.

The top of the Switch 2 cartridge's printed design sticker prominently displays the Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Switch cartridges. Inside the official Switch 2 carrying case, there's space for the console with Joy-Con 2 attached, six cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps.

Despite the color change, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical to their predecessors in every other aspect, including the unpalatable coating applied by Nintendo to prevent players from putting them in their mouths. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," explained Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta to GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, just three weeks away. Earlier today, a report surfaced that Nintendo's key electronics partner, Samsung, is already considering a hardware refresh for the Switch 2, which might include an upgrade to an OLED screen.
