Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: Could They Double as Computer Mice?
New circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unexpected function: computer mouse emulation. While the practicality for game developers remains uncertain, this potential feature aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.
The intriguing clue comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously unearthed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has already fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors. LiC's latest discovery involves shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles"—the typical bottom component of a computer mouse—intended for "game console handles."
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These designations are absent from public component databases, hinting at unreleased products. The reported 90 x 90mm size suggests the tape might cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handhelds
While a mouse-like controller mode is consistent with Nintendo's experimental approach, it's not unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features a right controller capable of functioning as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to facilitate smoother surface movement in this mode.
The Legion GO also boasts magnetic controller rails—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities offer potential insight into Nintendo's upcoming hybrid console.
