Nintendo has launched a new firmware update for the Switch to prepare for the upcoming Switch 2 debut.
Nintendo Switch Firmware Version 20.0.0 introduces several significant updates to the eight-year-old console, aligning it with the forthcoming Switch 2 launch in June, as detailed in the patch notes on Nintendo's official website.
A key feature is the new system transfer option to Nintendo Switch 2, accessible via System Settings. This allows users to transfer data from their Switch to a Switch 2 through local communication.
If you no longer have access to your Switch before acquiring a Switch 2, you can upload transfer data to a dedicated server for retrieval on your new console.
Be aware that initiating this transfer will reset your Switch to factory settings. Nintendo advises performing this only if you can complete the transfer on your Switch 2. Otherwise, opt for local communication transfer after obtaining your Switch 2.
Some Switch users planning to sell or trade their original console for a Switch 2 are eager to use this transfer feature, as it eliminates the need to retain their old device. However, others are wary of the mandatory factory reset and potential risks of data loss on Nintendo’s server.
The update also refreshes the design of select user icons, with the community spotlighting changes like Donkey Kong’s updated icon, reflecting its new look in upcoming Switch 2 titles Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World.
