Mark Hamill's surprise appearance as Luke Skywalker in *The Mandalorian* is etched in Star Wars lore as one of the franchise's most thrilling reveals. Rosario Dawson, who joined the Star Wars universe in *The Book of Boba Fett*, shared with us at Star Wars Celebration how she was equally blindsided by Hamill's cameo. She was completely unaware of his involvement until he physically appeared on set.
To maintain the secrecy around Luke's cameo, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau employed a clever ruse, using Jedi Master Plo Koon as a decoy in the scripts. This tactic was successful in keeping the surprise under wraps, but it also led to some confusion for Dawson. She recounted her bewilderment upon reading about Plo Koon's supposed return in the script, especially since fans knew of his demise in *Revenge of the Sith*.
"I was like... I don't know... but people disappear and then they come back, so maybe it's possible?" Dawson mused. The surprise was complete when Mark Hamill himself appeared on set, jokingly dismissing the idea of Plo Koon's return, saying, "Plo Koon? That wouldn't even make sense!" Dawson, still processing the script she had read, replied, "I know it didn't make sense, but I still had to think it made sense because I got the script and everything!"
Filoni and Favreau expressed their regret over the miscommunication, with Filoni admitting, "I think we assumed you'd gotten told the right information," and Favreau adding, "That was bad on us!" They emphasized the importance of keeping two major secrets for the show: Grogu's reveal at the end of the first episode and Luke Skywalker's appearance at the end of season two. Despite leaks plaguing other aspects of the production, these pivotal moments remained concealed until their reveal.
Dawson took the surprise in stride, humorously noting, "I love it, they know I can't be trusted." Her reaction encapsulates the fun and unpredictability that keeps fans and actors alike on their toes in the ever-expanding Star Wars universe.
