Ryan Reynolds Proposes R-Rated Star Wars Film to Disney

Ryan Reynolds recently revealed on The Box Office Podcast that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney. While it remains uncertain whether Disney will greenlight the idea or if it would be a movie or a TV series, Reynolds shared his vision for the project.

“I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property?’” Reynolds explained. “It doesn’t have to be like, an overt, A+ characters... there’s a wide range of characters you could use. I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated is a Trojan Horse for emotion, and I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that.”

Reynolds has a proven track record with R-rated films, having been involved in three of the top-five highest-grossing R-rated movies: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, a collaboration with Hugh Jackman, is the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, earning over $1.3 billion according to Box Office Mojo.

Despite his interest in an R-rated Star Wars project, Reynolds clarified that he wouldn’t want to star in it. “I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit,” he said. Instead, he expressed a desire to contribute behind the scenes, potentially as a producer or writer. He believes that Star Wars could benefit from the element of surprise, even if the franchise doesn't have the same scarcity it once did due to Disney+.
