The TV adaptation of The Last of Us has already been greenlit for a third season even before the second season began, and now there's buzz about a possible fourth season. Showrunner Craig Mazin has expressed that a fourth season is almost a necessity to fully tell the story from the two video games developed by Naughty Dog.
In a conversation with Collider, Mazin pointed out that attempting to wrap up the entire narrative in just the third season would stretch it out excessively. He mentioned that while Season 3 might be longer than Season 2, it's simply not feasible to conclude the story within three seasons. He stated, "Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome."
