Despite its swift demise after launch, Sony's hero shooter, Concord, continues to receive updates on Steam. This unexpected activity has sparked considerable speculation among gamers.
Concord's Post-Launch Steam Updates Fuel Speculation
Free-to-Play Resurgence or Gameplay Overhaul? Theories Abound
Remember Concord? The hero shooter that flopped spectacularly? Though officially removed from digital storefronts on September 6th, its Steam page shows a surprising number of updates.
Since September 29th, SteamDB shows over 20 updates, attributed to accounts like "pmtest," "sonyqae," and "sonyqae_shipping." These account names suggest the updates might focus on backend fixes and improvements, with "QAE" possibly indicating "Quality Assurance Engineer."
Concord's August launch was a significant misstep. Priced at $40, it faced stiff competition from free-to-play giants like Overwatch, Valorant, and Apex Legends. The launch was widely considered a failure, resulting in low player counts, negative reviews, and a rapid removal from sale by Sony, who offered refunds.
So why the continued updates? In the game's shutdown announcement, former Firewalk Studios Game Director Ryan Ellis mentioned exploring options to better reach players. This has led to widespread speculation that Concord might be revived, possibly as a free-to-play title. This would address a major criticism of the original release: its price point.
Given Sony's reported $400 million investment, attempting to salvage the project isn't surprising. The updates suggest Firewalk Studios might be overhauling the game, adding features, and addressing criticisms such as uninspired gameplay and lackluster characters.
However, this remains unconfirmed. Sony has remained silent on Concord's future. Will it return with improved mechanics, broader appeal, or a revised monetization strategy? Only Firewalk Studios and Sony know for sure. Even as a free-to-play title, it faces an uphill battle in a saturated market.
Currently, Concord is unavailable for purchase, and Sony hasn't announced its plans. Whether Concord will rise from its ashes remains to be seen.
