Argentine indie studio Matajuegos has released its surreal documentary game Atuel on Android and PC via Steam. Initially launched on itch.io in September 2022, Atuel gained recognition for its documentary narrative style, experimental gameplay mechanics, and captivating visual design.
Award-Winning Artistic Vision
The game has earned prestigious honors including the Innovation in Experience Design Award at IndieCade 2022. It has been showcased at international cultural events including the Marché du Film in Cannes and exhibitions at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C.
Exploring Human-Environment Connections
Atuel examines the profound bond between communities and their natural surroundings in Argentina's Cuyo desert region. The experience blends authentic personal accounts with fluid, dream-inspired gameplay elements.
Players traverse expansive, surreal environments that mirror the real Atuel River Valley and Cuyo desert landscapes. The gameplay allows transformation into various ecological elements - from native wildlife to the river itself.
Throughout the journey, players encounter perspectives from historians, scientists, and local residents discussing the region's ecological past and future. The narrative thoughtfully examines climate change impacts and humanity's relationship with natural resources. Explore the game through this trailer:
Natural Inspiration
The Atuel River, originating from glacial Atuel Lake in the Andes, serves as game's primary inspiration. As Mendoza's longest river, it sculpts the breathtaking Atuel Canyon within Valle Grande - landscapes that directly influenced the game's visual design.
Creative Philosophy
Developed in partnership with international filmmakers from The 12.01 Project, lead artist Santiago Franzani describes Atuel as transcending traditional documentary formats. The experience prioritizes emotional resonance over realism, using movement, form and audio to craft its narrative about humanity's fragile environmental relationships.
Currently available as a free download with full controller support, Atuel can be experienced on the Google Play Store.
