Following the official unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2, it appears the collaboration between Nintendo and Xbox is set to continue strongly. Phil Spencer, the head of gaming at Microsoft, recently reiterated his commitment to the Switch platform, viewing it as a strategic channel for the company to engage with audiences beyond its own ecosystems.
In a discussion with Variety, Spencer was asked whether Microsoft has specific projects planned for the Nintendo Switch 2. The Xbox lead stated that, much like the company’s ongoing support for the original Switch, it intends to extend that support to the upcoming console.
"Nintendo has proven to be an excellent partner. The Switch offers us a unique avenue to connect with players who aren't on PC or Xbox," Spencer explained. "This allows us to grow our community of fans who are passionate about our game franchises, which is essential as we continue investing in our titles."
"I have a great deal of respect for Nintendo’s role in this industry, and we're committed to supporting them moving forward," Spencer added. "Having Nintendo’s backing for our own franchises is also a key part of our long-term vision."
Spencer has been a consistent advocate for the Nintendo Switch 2, previously praising Nintendo's innovative approach around the time of the console's initial teaser. At that point, he also confirmed Xbox’s strategy to release more of its games across multiple platforms—including PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo systems.
When Variety inquired whether the Switch 2's reveal made Spencer eager to announce what Xbox has planned for its own hardware lineup, it seems the announcement hasn’t shifted the company's focus.
"Not at all. I believe everyone in the industry should concentrate on nurturing their communities and expanding their player bases," Spencer noted. "While I'm inspired by the work of many creators and other platform holders, I have full confidence in our roadmap."
The Xbox lead reaffirmed the company’s goal to continue delivering high-quality games and making them accessible across as many platforms as possible—from cloud and PC to consoles. Titles such as Pentiment and Obsidian’s Grounded have already been released on Nintendo platforms, and it will be intriguing to see what Xbox brings to the Switch 2 once the console officially launches.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to make its official debut on June 5, 2025. Pre-orders are not yet available, but stay tuned to our dedicated Switch 2 pre-order hub for the latest updates on availability.
