In the vast world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a daunting task. Luckily, many vehicles are still operational, and if you lack the keys, hotwiring is the solution. This guide explains how to hotwire cars in Project Zomboid.
Hotwiring is surprisingly simple, requiring just a few button presses. However, there are prerequisites. You don't need a top-tier character build, but you'll need specific skills.
Hotwiring Requirements:
To hotwire, you need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
How to Hotwire a Car:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle's radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
Your character automatically hotwires the car. Once complete, press W to start the engine. Remember to check the fuel level beforehand.
Leveling Electrical and Mechanics Skills:
If you didn't start as a Burglar, you'll need to level up your skills.
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts (found in vehicles and other locations).
Books and magazines also provide skill boosts. Check mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves during looting. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant skill XP. You'll need tools like screwdrivers to dismantle or install parts. Right-click on vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" to begin.
